Life Between the Sheets
Boat Bum {/Bot /Bum) n. A term used to denote a subculture, The characteristics of which may include aspects of, but do not necessarily extend to the beach bum, bohemian, surfer, gypsy or tribal subcultures.
The members of this subculture are typically water loving people who enjoy time sailing, relaxing, working on and exploring via boats. As such, the life of a boat bum is usually one of leisure and fun punctuated by moments of sheer terror. This holds true if the particular boat bum is on a powerboat or sailboat and is a racer, a day sailor, a cruiser or a liveaboard.

Ahoy! Welcome to Boat Bumz. If you live on a sailboat, or plan to spend any amount of time on one, your life is literally lived “between the sheets”. Although I moved off my sailboat a few years ago and became a “dirt dweller” I try to spend as much time as possible on boats. Whether that be cruising, teaching, or delivering them. Recently it has been restoring a few.
This site seeks to share the rewards as well as the trials and tribulations of the cruising and live aboard lifestyles. As well as the freedom, self reliance and adventure of a life on the water. Embracing the Less is More philosophy and downsizing to a boat, even for a few months out the year, takes a bit of planning and prior preparation. It boils down to a conscious choice to simplify and take control of one’s life. There are all sorts of books, blogs and social media accounts about how to accomplish such a feat and why you would want to, starting with Thoreau’s “Walden”. I am not the first, nor will be the last, to share the journey toward this lofty goal. So join me, even if you are committed to being a “dirt dwewller” for the rest of your life, you will find that a fair amount of the information here will transfer easily into your plans.
